Several weeks ago I attended a presentation given by you at HP - San Diego on Cross-Cultural Communication. I enjoyed your presentation very much. At the end of the presentation your handout titled "Cultural Values Spectrum" was distributed. During the presentation you touched on most of these values. One which I would like to understand further is "being vs. doing". "Doing" seems relatively obvious. I need a better handle on "being". I believe there is a spiritual side to this that I don't understand.
When you talk with someone from the United States, conversation turns almost immediately to what you DO in terms of work.
In other parts of the world, Europe for example, people will talk about their weekend hikes, their avid love of opera, or any other aspect of their BEINGNESS.
The spectrum slides between defining ourselves by our work, or who we are as a total person, including our identity with spirit.
